What Are The Benefits Of Composting?
Composting has many environmental benefits including improvements to current landscape waste disposal practices, improvements to current dairy manure management practices, and a final product that improves soil health.
Dairy Manure Management Benefits
Composting has been found to be a viable, more environmentally friendly solution for dairy manure management. Mixing dairy manure with landscape waste creates a product that can be easily stored and land applied. An alternative to composting, and a common dairy manure management practice, is knifing raw dairy manure into the soil. Raw dairy manure has a lower nutritional value than compost and requires a more labor intensive land application.
Landscape Waste Disposal Benefits
Landscape waste in the United States accounts for roughly 20% of the total trash collected each year. In 1990, landscape waste was banned from Illinois landfills, leaving limited disposal options for landscapers and municipalities. In our 847 area code alone there are over 500 landscaping service companies, most of which travel long distances to dispose of their waste. The choice to compost directly reduces the need to burn or bury landscape waste, which are both inferior environmental substitutes to composting. In fact, there have been discussions regarding Illinois passing an anti-burn law for landscape waste. We provide a more convenient and compliant disposal alternative for local landscapers and municipalities.
